Rules of Thumb for Japanese Ministry #12 Laugh A Lot

I was in college the first time I read Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. You can find the book’s outline here. The second rule was “Smile.” How simple! How powerful! My family observes that I don’t do that enough. Within the Japanese culture also, perhaps smiling is not high on the facial expression chart. Do you know why Japanese don’t smile on pictures and paintings of the Tokugawa Era?   Answer: Cheese was not popular.  If you don’t get the joke, drop me a note.

A related point for Carnegie’s “Smile” is “Laugh.” How important in life and especially in ministry with Japanese! Ministry is serious business, but I would encourage you to make special effort to “smile.” “laugh,” and “have a good time.”  People are attracted to Jesus as they see joy expressed in the smile/laugh.
